Amber Alert cancelled, girl found safe

There were more questions than answers late Friday after Valeria Cardenas, an 11-year-old Tempe girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert throughout the day, was found by police at a Mesa apartment complex, safe, unharmed and wandering around on her own.

The break came about 4 hours after the case took a dramatic twist when Carlos Mota-Aguilera, 19, the man thought to be with her, showed up at his grandmother’s house in Mesa. He later was jailed for custodial interference after offering information that led investigators to the girl, police said..

Police had issued an Amber Alert saying Valeria had been missing since 6:50 a.m. and possibly was en route to Mexico with Mota-Aguilera.

Additional details have not been released. The alert is a high-tech system that broadcasts information about abducted children, suspects and their getaway vehicles.
